Mediterranean Cruises

02 November 2011

Late cruise deals to the Mediterranean region involve a wealth of culture, languages, people and monuments. For a relatively small region, it certainly is not short of sites to see, nor countries to visit. The name Mediterranean means “in the middle of the sea” and is associated with the Christian era. The sea itself is thought to heavily influence the large range of countries that surround it, and draw them culturally together.

Sardinia and Sicily

The two largest islands that you are likely to visit include Sardinia and Sicily, both belonging to Italy. They are both rich in scenery and landscape, with lush vegetation and awe inspiring mountains. Sardinia is deeply entrenched in history, known as the granary of the Romans, despite not holding any major economic significance today. It also contains many churches, which have considerable religious attention and are architecturally stunning.

Sicily is economically vital to Italy, being known as its farm and market garden, due to the amount of wine, fruit and vegetables it produces. There are many local markets that allow you to marvel at what is on offer. You can also visit the famous Mount Etna, the highest volcano in Europe, which has erupted in recent years. You are able to ride a considerable distance up the mountain, and obtain spectacular views.

Greek Lonian Islands

The Greek island of Corfu is a vital must see on any Mediterranean cruise. It is one of the larger islands, at 33 miles wide, and 15 miles across. Inland, there is a wealth of olive and citrus groves, and a wetland nature reserve, Lake Korisson. The western side of the island is truly idyllic with white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, yet have not gained in too much popularity so that you still have the ability to find a tranquil spot.

Kefallonia

This is worth a mention for its lush vegetation and is the location of the book, Captain Corelli’s Mandarin. Moreover, the Mellisani Cave must be visited due to its unparalleled view of the sea: in an underground seawater lake.

Egypt

Egypt is a must see stop on any Mediterranean cruise. This North African country has Port Said as the major port for Cairo, and this allows you to see the best of this historical city. Cairo offers a spectacular array of shopping – provided you know how local custom works! When in doubt, haggle, haggle and haggle some more. Any trip to Cairo must involve stepping slightly outside of the city to Giza, in order to see the pyramids, protected by the sphinx. In the evening, there is a wonderful sound and light show nearby, which captures the beauty of these monuments perfectly. In central Cairo, there is a wealth of museums, the most famous of which being the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, featuring the mask of Tutankhamen, the child king. Crowds gather easily here, so be sure to plan plenty of time for this trip to avoid disappointment.
