First-time Cruisers

First-time Cruisers

30 January 2012

Going on a cruise for the very first time is an exciting experience and there are many things to think about when making plans. Preparation is essential and taking a little time to sort out important items before you set sail will pay dividends once your cruise is under way.

Advance Knowledge

It’s fun to learn about your route, ports of call, and any countries you will be visiting in advance. Are there any particular sights you want to see? Have you heard or read any tips from previous passengers on places to avoid? Study the ship’s layout and facilities so you will feel comfortable once on board and ask a few pertinent questions if there are specific queries about cabin location, for example, how the dining procedures work or what the menus are like.

For the most part, items such as hairdryers can be supplied on board, but it is always worth checking and some people bring an extension lead capable of supplying their electrical items. Excursions are often bookable in advance; however, it is worth checking which ones are easy to book at the port of call, as these will most likely be cheaper. Of course, advance booking does guarantee a place.

Paperwork

If you’ve booked your ticket and packed your suitcase, you’re good to go, right? Wrong! The boarding process for cruises is such that you will need to have checked which documentation is required for the entire journey, including the countries you plan to visit. It’s important to bear in mind that the correct paperwork for one person may differ from that needed for another because of their nationality.

For example, to avoid any problems make sure your passport is valid for at least six months following the date of return travel. Visas are required in some circumstances, depending on the nationality of the passenger, and the countries and ports of call they plan to visit. Always ask the company handling your cruise deals for advice as many will give you a list of requirements well in advance.

Dressing for Dinner

Naturally, passengers planning an itinerary take account of the climate in each of the places they plan to visit, and, to a certain extent, this dictates what clothes they pack. A good tip is to remember that layers of fine fabrics create and retain warmth, the better to deal with both warmer and cooler weather. On board most ships, there is still a dress code, and certain standards of dress are expected on certain occasions in the main dining areas. It is a good idea to bring some formal clothes so the option to dress up for special events is there.

What’s on the Menu?

All the best cruise deals are inclusive of excellent catering to a very high standard. There are now a number of dining options in addition to the traditional buffet breakfast and lunch in the Lido, and dinner in the dining room. Passengers can normally choose where they want to eat every day.
