Once considered to be the preserve of the wealthy, cruising now appeals to more people than ever, it has been claimed.
William Gibbons, director of the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA), said cruises are now more affordable than ever.
"In the economic situation, cruising has got a big advantage because of its all-inclusive nature and its value so you can budget much better by paying upfront. If you take a two-week cruise, you have paid for all your meals," he added.
Cruise holidays also include entertainment and transport to a range of different destinations, making them "incredibly good value" for those on a tight budget.
According to a PSA report published earlier this year, the Mediterranean is the most popular cruise destination for British holidaymakers, as well as the Caribbean and western Europe.
The UK cruise market grew by 11 per cent last year, with 1.5 million people opting for holidays at sea.
P&O Cruises are available from only £199 per person
