Dame Shirley Bassey Becomes Godmother – to P&O Adonia
28 February 2011
P&O Cruises seems to have hit the right button when they recently announced that Dame Bassey will become godmother to their latest cruise ship – the Adonia - to be launched in Southampton on the 21st of May.
‘I have had the most exciting career imaginable, but to be invited to be godmother to a cruise ship is something very special and very personal,’ Dame Shirley said.
Carol Marlow, the managing director of P&O Cruises said that Shirley Bassey was a UK national treasure. Since P&O was the country’s number one cruise line, it made perfect sense for the two to work together. “It’s a perfect match and I am sure on our naming day she will need no excuse to get the party started.” Carol added.
More than 500 distinguished guests will attend the naming ceremony that takes places on the Adonia’s top deck. The next day the cruise ship will depart on its maiden voyage – a splendid 16 day cruise to the Western Mediterranean. Ports of call include Alghero (Sardinia), Portofino (Italy), Sete (France) and Barcelona and Mahon (Spain).
Adonia is a much smaller cruise ship than the giants cruising the seven seas lately. With only 710 passengers it will have a much more personal, exclusive feel to it. Being small also has other advantages, including the ability to dock at smaller, off-the-beaten track destinations.
