Sydney Plays Host to Cunard Queen Mary 2 and Cunard Queen Elizabeth
24 February 2011
The historic occasion also marks the first time ever that 2 Cunard cruise liners have been in Sydney harbour at the same time. Nearly 70 years ago, on the 9th of April 1941, the two original Queens, the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Elizabeth, passed each other at Sydney Heads. Both of them were of course troop carriers – a world apart from the luxury and opulence of the modern cruise liner.
The 2 luxury liners met at about 5.30 just outside Sydney Heads before proceeding into the harbour – Queen Mary 2 first, followed by Queen Elizabeth. They docked at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at 7am.
Both these ships are of course midway through world cruises. The Queen Mary 2 recently left New York and cruised down the east coast of North America and South America. It docked at a number of locations many of us can only dream to visit: Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Montevideo in Uruguay and later Cape Town in South Africa. From Sydney it will cruise to Asia, then on to Europe and finally back to the US after visiting the Caribbean on the way.
The Queen Elizabeth meanwhile arrived in Australia after a visit to New Zealand.
