Julian Burgess is the captain of the Queen Elizabeth. For him it was also an historic visit as the last time he visited Fremantle was 25 years ago. This was way back when he was still a cadet on the Canberra ocean liner – in those days considered to be a state of the art cruise ship, but in today’s terms nothing to rave about.
On Monday 1st March 2011 he returned as the Captain of one of the grand ladies of the seven seas, the Queen Elizabeth. He proudly stated that his was ‘the best job in the world’.
He continued “Being Captain of a ship, particularly this ship is a great honour, it’s a great job.”
The Queen Elizabeth was launched by her majesty the Queen of England in October of 2010. Carrying more than 2000 passengers and 1000 crew members, it boasts no less than ten restaurants and cafes, a double-storey library and also two swimming pools.
From Fremantle the Queen will continue to Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore before finally returning to the UK via Europe.
Some other impressive facts about the Queen Elizabeth include: a total length of just under 300m; a theatre that seats 800 people; a fine art gallery featuring photographs of famous figures such as Winston Churchill, Elizabeth Taylor and Cary Grant; Décor reminiscent of the 1920s throughout the ship.
