The Oasis of the Seas shares the title of the world’s biggest cruise ship with her sister, the Allure of the Seas. Both these ships weigh in at 225,000 tons – more than five times the weight of the Titanic.
When the Oasis departed from Fort Lauderdale to Jamaica on the 19th March, Sandra Grant Griffiths, the Consul General of Jamaica, was there to share the exciting start of their cruise holiday with the nearly 6,000 passengers on board the new mega luxury liner.
The Royal Caribbean cruise ship will dock in the newly built Falmouth Port in Trelawny on the 22nd March. Afterwards it will cruise to Haiti and Mexico before returning to Port Everglades.
The Consul General addressed the many enthusiastic passengers boarding the ship, as well as family members and friends who came to wave them goodbye. She gave them a brief introduction to the many tourist attractions of Jamaica, as well as the new Falmouth Port development. Afterwards, souvenirs of Jamaican flags were handed out.
Officials of Royal Caribbean Cruises, the Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale and Broward County Commission accompanied Mrs Grant Griffiths on her tour.
The development of the new Falmouth Port is expected to provide a significant boost to the local tourist industry. Royal Caribbean and the Port of Jamaica are working in conjunction to make sure everything is ready for the arrival of the 225,000 ton super-cruiser with its 5 400 passengers.
Eventually the port development will also include a themed retail shopping area with many attractions.
