Cunard has since responded to remarks in the press about the low-key manner in which Commodore Warner’s departure was handled. Peter Shanks, Managing Director and President of Cunard, had this to say: “I must put on record our appreciation for the marvellous contribution that Bernie made to Cunard Line. We wish him and his family all the best for his retirement."
We can now confirm that Cunard has appointed a new Commodore for its fleet of three ships (Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth). His name is Captain Christopher Rynd.
Commodore Rynd has been with Cunard since 2005. He was in command of both Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria. He often visited the construction site of the Queen Victoria and was present during her first trial cruises. Many experienced cruisers will also remember him as the captain of the Queen Mary 2 on its inaugural world cruise.
Born in New Zealand, he spent his childhood years in Singapore, Sri Lanka, Fiji and Samoa in the South Pacific. His sea career started in New Zealand when he was only 17 years old. He later spent eight years as a reserve officer in the Royal Navy. He qualified as Master in 1979.
After joining P&O cruises, his first cruise liner was the Oronsay and he spent much of his time on cruises between the UK and Australia. Later on he commanded ships like the Regal Princess, Royal Princess, the two Pacific Princesses, Sapphire Princess and also Pacific Sky.
His Australian-born wife Julie will accompany him for a large part of the year. When not cruising, the couple like to spend time in either the UK or Australia. They also often visit New Zealand.
