In a pioneering move for the luxury cruise line, Holland America has decided to base MS Rotterdam in Europe from September 2012. The ship will be based in the Dutch port that bears its name. The reason for the company’s decision lies in the deep historical ties they have with the city and its strategic location in the European North West.
The itineraries that have been released so far include a number of regional cruises ranging between 14 and 18 days each, as well as two extended trips of 34 and 90 days respectively.
The Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Guest Programs of the company, Richard Meadows, said: “The city of Rotterdam is where Holland America Line has its roots, and for us to place a ship there year-round is sentimental, exciting and ground-breaking for our line and our guests.”
He added that Rotterdam was an excellent departure point for European cruisers, but that the longer trips would also be perfect for those flying in from around the world.
After finalising its European summer season, the MS Rotterdam departs on a 14-day Portugal and Spain Explorer cruise that will give passengers a glimpse of the Strait of Gibraltar on its way to Barcelona in Spain. The ship will also dock at a number of Portuguese ports.
Those who really want to experience something unique can embark on a 90-day cruise to the Far East that departs on the 9th January 2013. The MS Rotterdam will take the easterly route and call at ports in Spain and Greece, pass through the Suez Canal, and even visit India en route.
