It seems the booming cruise market has no end. In a not-so-surprising move P&O Cruises recently announced that the company has placed an order for yet another super cruise-liner. The ship will be able to carry 3,611 passengers and, if everything goes according to plan, it will be launched in March 2015.
P&O’s parent company, Carnival Corporation, has signed a contract with Italian shipyard Fincantieri to build the giant 141,000 ton cruise ship. It will be the largest ship that has ever been built specifically for the UK cruise market.
The CEO and Chairman of Carnival, Micky Arison, said “The UK continues to be a key growth market for Carnival and innovative vessels such as this new P&O Cruises ship…underscore our commitment to expanding this important cruise region.”
The Managing Director of P&O Cruises, Carol Marlow, added that the new ship will provide cruise lovers with the ultimate P&O experience: all the new features that are needed to attract newcomers to the P&O brand with all the well-known P&O features to ensure that loyal customers keep on coming back for more.
She added that the new ship will offer all the classic favourites the Aurora and Oriana have become known for, the variety and choices provided by Ventura and Azura and a whole array of new concepts and ideas.
Carnival clearly believes in the future of the cruise market: the company currently has seven other ships on order. One will be delivered in 2011, three in 2012, two in 2013 and one in 2014.
