Celebrity Cruises has been in expansion mood for the past few years. The company has unveiled a new cruise liner every year since 2008, but this era is apparently soon to come to an end.
According to Dan Hanrahan, the CEO of Celebrity, the 21-year-old cruise line has, at present, no plans to order additional ships after they have taken delivery of the ones that are still on order.
Hanrahan was speaking to reporters on board the company’s brand new cruise ship, the Celebrity Silhouette. He said “We've taken an awful lot (of new capacity) in a very, very short time. At this point we don't have any plans for a new class of ship.”
The Silhouette was christened in a glamorous ceremony in Hamburg on Thursday. It is the fourth ship in the company’s highly popular Solstice range that started debuting in 2008.
Celebrity still has one more order outstanding: the 3,030 passenger Celebrity Reflection will be ready for service in the autumn of 2012.
The company ordered the ship before the economic woes of the past few years. The Solstice Class ships are the biggest in the Celebrity fleet and offer innovative features such as two-story spas and outdoor lawn clubs with actual grass. Each ship also has a number of speciality restaurants.
While Celebrity does not have any plans for new ships, the company is still spending a significant amount of money on upgrading their existing fleet to Solstice standards. The process is quite aptly called Solsticizing.
