Queen Mary 2 Sails Past Scarborough

Queen Mary 2 Sails Past Scarborough

21 September 2011

The good people of Scarborough got a closer look at the biggest cruise liner in the world as she cruised along the East coast recently.

Queen Mary 2 sailed past Scarborough for the third time on Monday 19th September at just after eight in the morning. Her previous visits took place in 2004 and 2009. Two weeks earlier, on the 3rd September, Scarborough cruise lovers had the privilege of watching Queen Elizabeth sail past.

On board the Queen Elizabeth was none other than veteran broadcaster and DJ Sir Jimmy Savile, who has had the good fortune of travelling on board Cunard’s cruise ships many times before. He missed the Queen Mary 2 cruise because he was busy with a TV production in Leeds.

Sir Jim commented “Coming past Scarborough is something which thrills all the passengers. Even those who don’t know Yorkshire say ‘we must come back here’.”

He described the view of Scarborough from the sea as “spectacular” and jokingly said it makes him feel like diving overboard and swimming ashore to dine at the Rendezvous Café.

It seems that Sir Jim takes sailing past Scarborough quite seriously: he has done so in three ships so far – the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Elizabeth 2 and the Queen Elizabeth.

The Queen Mary 2 is widely hailed as the most magnificent and grandest cruise liner ever built. In 2009 she sailed past Scarborough as part of a fifth birthday cruise. Her return was welcomed by Janet Deacon, the Area Director of Welcome to Yorkshire.
