Cunard Line has published details about the planned refurbishment of the company’s flagship, Queen Mary 2. The grand lady of the seas, of course, turns eight in January next year and the company felt the time was ripe to spruce her up a bit.
Among others she will get new curtains, carpets, linens and bed covers. When she returns from her visit to the dry dock she will also offer guests a number of new features, but Cunard was not prepared to give details about that at the moment.
Queen Mary 2 will check in at the Blohm and Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany on the 24th November. If everything goes to plan, she will check out again on the 7th December – virtually a new ship. Refurbishment will take place in all staterooms, as well as the Queens Grill, the Canyon Ranch Spa Club, the Commodore Club, the Princess Grill Restaurants, Sir Samuel’s, the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bar, the popular Golden Lion Pub and the Play Zone.
Cunard decided to use Tillberg Design (the same company that handled the ship’s original design work) to take care of the new designs.
The Managing Director and President of Cunard, Peter Shanks, said “Queen Mary 2 is an iconic leader in the world of luxury ocean travel… she is unquestionably the pride of our fleet. We are committed to maintaining that impeccable reputation.”
The two-week refit will provide work to thousands of workers. They will replace carpets with a size equal to that of ten football fields.
