Last week we reported about the Queen Mary 2’s pending visit to the dry dock in November/December. She is due for a major refurbishment, including new carpets and upholstery.
While all of this will be very nice indeed, many passengers will be more concerned with the changes envisioned for the legendary Golden Lion pub – where many a passengers has spent numerous happy hours sampling the delightful selection of alcoholic beverages.
Cunard’s Managing Director, Peter Shanks, said “Our guests have worn the pub out. The pub lunches are more popular than ever, the bar area is always busy, and sport and musical events are increasingly popular.”
While it will get bigger TV screens and additional deep-buttoned leather chairs, not all regulars might appreciate the new décor that will, according to the company “recreate the best of British pubs as well as the comfortable American Country Club feel.” The best pubs in the world are “worn out” – it takes years to become like that – and that is exactly why the regulars love them.
Perhaps we should rather concentrate on what will not be changed during the revamp: the Winter Garden will remain unchanged. So will Sir Samuel’s Bar – despite rumours that it will revert back to its original form; a wine bar. It will, however, get new chair coverings and carpets.
The King’s Court buffet restaurant will also remain basically unchanged. The company plans to add additional dining options and themed evenings instead.
