Royal Caribbean Cruises signed a deal with Spanish shipyard Reparaciones Navantia in Cadiz on the 1st November 2011 in terms of which Splendour of the Seas will receive a comprehensive makeover.
The cruise liner has already arrived at the shipyard, which expects the renovation project to last five weeks and provide employment for a total of more than 550 workers, architects, engineers, builders, interior designers and technical specialists. It will take a total of over 100,000 man hours to complete the work.
In the process the ship will be fitted with an extension to the bridge wings and a new “duck tail.” She will also undergo routine maintenance work to rudders, propellers and tail shafts.
Once the work is completed the Splendour will proudly feature a host of new guest amenities and dining venues. Some of these include upgraded technology throughout the ship and flat screen television in all staterooms. She will also get 124 new balconies.
The project forms part of a programme costing $300 million during which all the cruise lines’ ships will be fitted with the latest innovations in the world of cruising to ensure guests are provided with the best cruise holiday experience on the market.
Royal Caribbean currently owns 22 modern ships that regularly call at more than 270 destinations across 72 countries and six continents. The cruise line also offers a range of unique cruise/land tours covering destinations such as Canada, Alaska, Europe, Dubai, New Zealand and Australia.
