A while ago we reported about the fact that, although the QE2 was still being maintained meticulously, there was little, if any, sign of her being converted to a luxury hotel – which was the plan when she was sold for $100 million a few years ago. By now the grand old lady must be getting very bored with Dubai, where she has been sitting idly for the last three years.
At least we have some good news for readers: the QE2 will soon be alive with the sound of laughter and music again, thanks to the efforts of a local company. Global Event Management, based in the United Arab Emirates, has rented the ship for a black-tie, invitation only event on New Year’s Eve.
In what has become a characteristic of similar Dubai events, the company claims it will be one of the “most exclusive New Year celebrations” anywhere on earth. The guest list, it says, will include royals, celebrities and dignitaries – although the company was not prepared to mention any names at this stage.
Queen Elizabeth 2 fan Rob Lightbody from Scotland, who has tirelessly campaigned for the preservation of the luxury liner, is excited about the plans – although he does not expect to be invited to attend the exclusive function.
He says the ship is still “in fabulous condition, but without any guests, parties, food and entertainment, she lacks the buzz that she had for 40 years on the seas. This will all return for one fabulous night, by the sounds of it.”
