Both the Queen Mary 2 and the Oriana are currently undergoing upgrades at the Blohm and Voss shipyard in Hamburg. The Queen Mary arrived on the 26th November and the Oriana on the 16th November.
Oriana will spend about a month in the dry dock for major renovation and upgrades, which includes a “duck tail” to improve the ship’s stability at sea. A number of new cabins will also be installed and existing cabins and public spaces will be refurbished. The pool area will get a new lounge area and a bar.
The ship’s stern-side propulsion shafts will also be removed and overhauled, as well as the engines, piping and electrical systems. The tanks will be inspected, emptied and cleaned and minor steel work will also be undertaken.
For the Queen Mary 2 this is her fifth time at the Blohm and Voss shipyard. Before her eighth anniversary all her carpets, bedcovers and curtains will be replaced. She will also undergo comprehensive inspections and maintenance work. The Queen Mary 2 will leave the shipyard again on the 5th December at about lunchtime.
All cabins will receive a major overhaul, as well as the Queens and Princess Grill Restaurant, the Commodore Club, the Golden Lion Pub, the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bar, The Canyon Ranch Spa Club, the Sir Samuel’s, the Zone and the Play Zone.
Blohm and Voss will use more than 1,000 workers during the renovation project.
