The Sun Princess celebrated 50 years of calls last Friday.
P&O Cruise Lines Sun Princess made a call to port last Friday marking 50 years of service by the international cruise ship line. The Sun Princess is 77,441gt in size. On the previous day the Radiance of the Seas made port, with Diamond Princess following on Saturday. Sea Princess and Volendam made port on Sunday, along with the Oceanic Discoverer that returned to Dunedin. These cruise ships were all in service from 1995 to 2005, though the cruise line has been in business since 1961. The Seven Seas that was first introduced to Dunedin in 1961 was once a cargo vessel used by the U.S. Navy before it was turned into a prototype for an escort carrier. It is currently docked in Dunedin.
The history to be found with cruise ships, such as the Seven Seas and others we have named can make travelling on one of the newer ships exciting. After all, one of the newer cruise ships can take you to any number of ports where an old sea vessel may be waiting for tours, while others are heading to the scrap yard. Dunedin, though far from the UK, may be worth a visit in order for you to say you have visited one of the busiest cruise ports in the southern hemisphere. The World, which was the first residential ship to be launched in 2002, made port in Dunedin twice.
