If you are one of the key workers at the Olympic Games in London this summer, you will probably already be aware of the good news that Fred Olsen’s Braemar has been chartered to provide accommodation for you and your colleagues.
The ship will be anchored in East London for a total of 34 days, starting on the 12th July 2012. It will depart again on the 15th August.
The luxurious cruise liner will serve as temporary accommodation for about 900 employees – mostly those employed in the transport depots and those who are responsible to transport officials and competitors around the Games’ venues.
Braemar is expected to be tied up at King George V Dock or Albert Dock near the London City airport close to the Excel centre where most of the wrestling, weightlifting, table tennis, taekwondo, fencing and boxing events will take place.
The fact that the ship has been chartered for this purpose resulted in the cancellation of three cruises. According to veteran cruise journalist John Honeywell, a company spokesperson told him: “Guests whose existing bookings are affected will be offered an alternative cruise, together with a goodwill gesture to acknowledge the inconvenience this may cause. Guests who choose not to take up this offer will be given a full refund.”
The cruises that had to be cancelled were all scheduled to leave from Dover. They are a 16-day cruise to the Western Mediterranean, a 15-night cruise to Spitsbergen and North Cape and a 14-night trip to the Baltic and St Petersburg.
