The ultimate cruise for fans of Greta Garbo

29 August 2012

If you are an ardent fan of that great actress Greta Garbo, we have good news for you: Cunard has partnered with a firm of Beverley Hills auctioneers to offer passengers the opportunity to see and buy rare items belonging to the actress during the transatlantic crossing of Queen Mary 2 in November this year.

Also, during the same journey, Derek Reisfield, who is Greta Garbo’s great nephew, will provide guests with a rare and personal insight into the life and career of the Hollywood icon.

Greta Garbo was often described as “Hollywood’s First Modern Woman.” Her career spanned many years, starting during the era of silent films and continuing until 1941, when she retired from public life at the age of only 36.

The display and auction on board Queen Mary 2 will feature several of the actress’s personal items, including her vintage umbrella, her favourite cashmere turtleneck and relics from her world travels. The latter include her travel watch, her Louis Vuitton suitcase and a luggage tag from one of her journeys.

Derek Reisfeld will recount personal anecdotes from Garbo’s life. As children they played together at least once every week. He will also discuss some of the highlights of her career and Ms Garbo’s personal relationships with world figures such as William Randolph Hearst, Sir Winston Churchill and President John F Kennedy.

Says the President of Cunard Line, Peter Shanks: “A highlight of any Cunard voyage is our Insights programme, and we are delighted to offer such a personal account of Garbo's legacy to Hollywood and to the rest of the world.”
