Locals marvel at arrival of Disney Magic

21 June 2016

The massive cruise ship Disney Magic returned to North Shields on Monday and was once again greeted by crowds of onlookers. The luxurious vessel left nearly two weeks ago after she first visited the Port of Tyne while on a cruise around Britain and Ireland.

She sailed into port at about 7am, playing 'When you Wish Upon a Star'. The 964-feet cruise ship eclipsed the DFDS Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry.

Among the onlookers was Lynn Gallagher, from Backworth. She said she never expected the vessel to be quite as big. Another Backworth resident, Ian Millar, said: “It’s a beautiful boat, and I’ve seen them all.” Charlie and Anne Critchlow, from Whitley Bay, often come to view these large vessels - and both found it amazing that such a large ship can actually float!

Both were delighted to see such large ships arriving in the Tyne and bringing cruise visitors to the area. Anne commented that there seemed to be a lot of them recently and Charlie added: “It’s a focal point, it’s something to come and see.”

About a hundred onlookers returned in the afternoon to watch the cruise ship depart on the River Tyne at about 5.30pm.

A number of kids were sporting Mickey Mouse headbands, as they waited for the Disney Magic eagerly.

South Shields resident Chris Robson was there with Claire, his seven-year old daughter. He exclaimed that the ship was unbelievably big and that his daughter was genuinely excited to see it. He added that she adored everything Disney.
