Comment:
Initial reaction overall on the NCL Jade was 'this is great'. We were impressed with our inside staterooms, roomy, comfortable beds, enough storage for 7 days and spotlessly clean with a good sized bathroom. The pool deck was good with two pools and a water slide and four jacuzzis and a plentiful supply of loungers and lots of space with two full decks to sunbathe plus other quieter areas. Food was good, a large variety of international dishes and places to eat. My husband would have preferred some dishes to be more plain though, without all the sauces and dressings. Entertainment was excellent with the crew performing some shows but we have seen better independent entertainers on other cruises. So all in all a good all round cruise holiday or so you would think. But then our nightmare began - on the first full sightseeing day in Barcelona, my husband was jostled while we were queuing to board a connecting bus on the 'City tour bus' blue line stop near Las Ramblas and within seconds had realised his wallet had been stolen from a pocket on his knee length shorts. The two men sped away we could not believe it and were shocked and upset at what had happened it was so quick and they disappeared into the crowd before we had chance to act. We then reported it at the local police station and made our way back to the ship without seeing anything of Barcelona. At reception on board they kindly gave us use of the outside telephone line to contact our bank and have the bank/credit cards blocked and made arrangements to transfer money from my husbands account into mine. When we had finished on the phone we asked a receptionist about replacing my husband's stolen passport. She informed us he could not stay on board and went to get a female security officer. She also confirmed he could not sail without his passport and would have to leave the ship. This was twenty minutes before we were due to sail, we obviously tried to reason with them but they did not care, just shrugged shoulders and said there was nothing they could do. For all intents and purposes he would have been stranded in Barcelona without a bean to his name. I gave my husband my bank card so he could have access to his money he had the foresight to transfer over and hurriedly got a bag together for him. Then he was escorted off the ship. We were devastated, my elder son, teenage daughter, her friend and our young foster son, we did not make a fuss just did as we were asked. It cost 800 euros in Taxis, an overnight hotel stay, flight from Barcelona to Nice and a 7 day replacement passport. Thankfully he got to the ship the next day in Monte Carlo, we tried to put it all behind us and get on with our holiday but the utter disbelief of what happened cast a huge shadow over us all. Using a search engine Barcelona is reported to be the number one capital city for pickpockets. In 2009 during May to November there were 6000 reported incidents of pickpocket theft. The receptionist on board informed us it also happened the week before. We were not the only ones that day, an elderly couple on our ship also fell victim but fortunately not their passports, i dread to think how they would have coped. The next morning at 5am a letter was pushed under my cabin door stating our on board credit had stopped through the credit card being blocked, the finance officer had no idea why until i informed him. I feel not enough is being done by NCL and maybe other cruise lines to fully inform their guests of the worst ports of call, after all they would have the affected guest statistics first hand. But that would be bad publicity and people may not choose those ports of call. I have written a letter of complaint to NCL at how this was handled. My husband could have got his passport the next day in Monte Carlo they already had a photocopy of it on embarkation day. When i asked for the passport number for my husband to have less problems at the British Consulate it was available on their system. I dont know of other cruise line procedures should you lose your passport but i have been given plenty of advice that a photocopy should be taken with you on your port of call days except in Dubrovnik where i believe it does have to be the original. PLEASE everyone who reads this take note and inform all your fellow cruise friends of what could potentially happen to you as well, my husband was fortunate to have money to fall back on not everyone is. We are still so full of disbelief and feel shell shocked and will not rest until we have some answers.
